NEW YORK, NEW YORK — According to online reports, aging tennis trailblazer and amateur Twitter psychologist Billie Jean King has been stricken with a debilitating case of foot in mouth disease—a condition doctors believe may worsen as she becomes increasingly out-of-touch with the demands of modern day tennis.
Ms. King's symptoms first appeared early last week when the elderly icon lambasted Naomi Osaka in a tweet for refusing to speak with the French Open press, only to backtrack in humiliation hours later after Osaka revealed her ongoing struggles with mental health.
"We can't go into details because of medical privacy laws, but the details are Billie has really, really lost it," said a senior podiatrist at New York University Medical Center. "Everyone here has been trying hard to keep it under wraps because she's usually so well respected, but it's been hard to watch her eat all that crow."
"She's seriously running the risk of being canceled by everyone on Twitter if we can't find a way to get her foot out of there."
Despite her recent verbal mishaps, two or three messages of support for the 77-year-old King have come from across the tennis spectrum, with a majority suggesting she simply take a break from speaking about Osaka, the press, mental health, and tennis altogether.
"What's happened is an absolute, unmitigated tragedy," lamented one long-time WTA Tour official who asked to remain anonymous for fear of being cut out of King's will. "Unfortunately, it's hard for her to follow what's happening in tennis these days. My recommendation is simple: rest, rest, and more rest. Give the tweeting a rest."
"She's getting to that age where you just have to say 'sure, Grandma,' pat her on the back, and move on."
